The New Kenwood EXcelon DNX9140 Navigation System

!±8± The New Kenwood EXcelon DNX9140 Navigation System

The DNX 9140 is the newest navigation system from Kenwood. As a mobile electronics professional I find the DNX 9140 to be extremely impressive. This new unit comes with a 6.95 inch WVGA a touch screen which allows the unit graphics to be more clean and crisp than the previous units from Kenwood. Plus the DNX 9140 uses Garmin's newest navigation software which has better mapping and integrates into the unit flawlessly.

In my opinion the most important part of this unit is the navigation system. Kenwood decided to choose Garmin as the provider of the navigation for this unit. Garmin is the leader in vehicle navigation systems. I find Garmin's interface to be the easiest to use and their mapping is the easiest to understand. Also, Garmin makes it there priority to keep their mapping up to date. If you are worried about traffic, there are optional MSN direct or TMC traffic adapters that will provide you with real-time traffic information while you're driving.

When it comes to the entertainment portion of the Kenwood DNX 9140, this unit is practically unmatched. The DNX 9140 is made for iPod and works with an iPhone. Also it is HD radio ready and satellite radio ready. Plus it comes with a built in 5.1 channel DSP with digital time alignment and a 13 band parametric equalizer. To be sure that to get the cleanest sound possible Kenwood fitted this unit with a set of five volt 5.1 RCA pre-outs and a 50 W by four amplifier.

If you have a cell phone and you are thinking about getting up Bluetooth hands-free device, the Kenwood DNX9140 already has you covered. It comes with a full-featured Bluetooth hands-free device that is made by Parrot. This device will automatically sync with your cell phone and automatically download your entire phone book to the DNX 9140. After that you can make and receive calls directly from the DNX 9140 without ever touching your phone.

If you are in the market for a full-featured navigation system the DNX 9140 is what I would recommend. In my opinion this unit is the best unit on the market. You will not be disappointed.

What Makes a Good GPS?

!±8± What Makes a Good GPS?

Now that you have somewhat made up your mind that you would like to buy a GPS device, a heavy question lands in your head. Pray, what makes a good GPS? How do I judge the qualities and capabilities of the various GPS systems available in the market? Are cheaper systems better? Should I look for more features? All these questions are bound to explode in your head.

Basically, choosing a GPS has the same fundamentals as choosing any electronic device or automobile. First, you must know what you need, what you are looking for. Do you need it to help you when you're hiking? Or do you need it to help you weave through traffic. Or maybe, you need it for both! Given below, are a few broad aspects you need to look out for.

Screen size is an important feature for GPS devices. A larger screen provides a larger map view and more context to where you are and what's coming up. But then again, the screen mustn't be so big as be termed bulky. I mean hey, you don't want to carry a theatre around on your dashboard now, do you? Ideally, something around 3.5 to 4.7 inches is best. Most GPS devices today are touch screen, so you should definitely check out the quality and sensitivity of the screen before purchasing.

Battery life is another deal maker. You want your GPS to have sufficient battery life to last relatively long journeys. Most good GPS systems today come with a car charger. 4 to 7 hours of battery life is the average. Then, you must also ensure that your GPS provider has up to date maps of your country.Very often, faulty, incorrect and incoherent maps lead to navigation disasters!

It's always better to choose a GPS that has a load of fun features like photo storage and mp3 playback. Bluetooth functionality allows you to synch your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone for hands-free calling.

Finally, the price. The best GPS device would be one that is neither too cheap nor too expensive but one that provides you all the features that will make using the GPS device a real pleasure without at the same time forcing you to overspend. The easiest way to overcome the price angle is to make a budget and stick to it.

Buying a GPS for the Best Money

!±8± Buying a GPS for the Best Money

Today everyone has a GPS from the person next door to every pilot you know. However, trying to find an aviation GPS is not all that easy if you are on a budget. If you have been in the market for an aircraft GPS you have probably already noticed the steep price. Fortunately, you can find a GPS from Garmin Avionics or any other company simply by searching the web. There are quite a few ways you can go about finding the GPS for the best money and the following tips will help you.

Tip #1 Search Google

The first place to start is with Google, or your preferred search engine. Type in the name of the GPS you are looking for and wait and see what the results show you. You may just be able to find the best and cheapest GPS this way or you may have to use some other methods. Generally, you will find several results for your search terms and then you can click on the various options. You will find that many stores sell the GPS for similar prices but there are others that are either much more expensive or much cheaper. If you think you have found a super cheap GPS then you may want to check the shipping charges. Many times companies will really mark down a GPS and increase the shipping considerably to make you think you are getting a good deal when you really are not.

Tip #2 Check Flyers

Many times stores have advertisements in their weekly flyers for sales they are having. If you check your local sportsman's store's flyers on a regular basis then you just might be able to find a GPS that is within your budget and close to what you were looking for to start with. You might be surprised that stores offer good deals on GPS equipment, but they do from time to time so it makes sense to keep an eye out.

Tip #3 Auction Sites

Believe it or not but one of the best places to find the GPS you have been looking for is on an auction site. People list new and used GPS equipment, as well as everything else, for bidders to bid on. Once you find the one you are looking for all you need to do is bid and see if you win. This is not always the best way to save money and sometimes you may get caught up in the bidding and spend more. But, as a rule, you will save money when you bid on auction sites.

How To Find The Best Marine GPS For Your Boat

!±8± How To Find The Best Marine GPS For Your Boat

To find the best marine gps, you have to do a lot of comparison shopping and reading about the different brands before making an informed decision. Do some comparison shopping, read the many reviews, and shop around a little bit before making up your mind which is the best marine gps navigational receiver for your needs. A marine gps navigational unit needs to use at least 12 of the 24 satellites calculating your position. All 24 would be the best, of course. And a larger screen for reading and viewing the water below the boat would be ideal. Some of the smaller, handheld or portable marine gps units are not the best because the size takes away from the clarity of the picture. There are several that are up to 7" with a crystal clear LCD touchscreen so you are able to distinguish a rock from a fish when looking at the water or bottom of the lake or ocean.

Another item to consider when hunting for the best marine gps would be the amount of alarms it has on it. Some have alarms for the clock, off-course, anchor drag, too shallow, too deep, proximity, low battery, arrival, waypoint, water temperature and temperature rate of change and there are others, but the best marine gps would have all the alarms for safety reasons. Along with the alarms, one must consider the nightwatch and sunlight modes many of the best marine gps units use to help with the glare from the sun off the water or to help you find your way back in the darkness of the night.

You will need to decide if you are going to purchase a small, handheld or portable model or a larger, 'stay put' type model of marine gps unit. The portable marine gps navigational units are smaller and fit in a pocket or a purse. However some of the bigger units can be taken out and used in a vehicle such as an RV or a car, but the portable ones are made for walking, hiking, biking and moving about the city with easy. Both styles of marine gps receivers come with the same amount of software and options, it just depends on which you prefer to have outside of the boat.

Do you want to be entertained? Some of the marine gps navigational units come with an audio voice player to play books on tape, others, you have to purchase a subscription to something like XM radio or a weather channel, which is not a bad idea since the weather changes rapidly and you want to be on top of things when the weather starts to change.

Above all, make sure the best marine gps unit has enough software to accommodate all you want to do while out in the boat, such as find fish or avoid large chucks of debris. These things can be done and avoided by the type of software available to download or that has already been downloaded into the marine gps unit. Do you have to purchase more antennas? Or extra cords for your computer to be compatible? These are questions you need to ask yourself and the salesperson behind the counter or on the other end of the website.
